Wiltshire is a county in South West England. It is landlocked and borders the counties of Dorset, Somerset, Hampshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire. Within the county's boundary are two unitary authority areas, Wiltshire and Swindon, governed respectively by Wiltshire Council and Swindon Borough Council. Wiltshire was named after the original county town of Wilton, however the county town is now Trowbridge, where Wiltshire Council is based.
Wiltshire is noted for its natural beauty and ancient landmarks, including, but not limited to; Salisbury Plain, the location of the Stonehenge and Avebury stone circles which Archaeologists believe date back as far as 3000 BC. Also the city of Salisbury, which is notable for its medieval cathedral among other popular architectural landmarks. Important country houses open to the public include Longleat, near Warminster, and the National Trust's Stourhead, near Mere. It is a UNESCO Cultural and World Heritage site.
